Sample Letter to your City Council Representative

Dear Council Member__________.

I am writing you to encourage you to pass changes to the existing city code which would prohibit wild animal circuses from performing in Minneapolis.

Wild animal circuses are a known public safety risk, because wild animals are unpredictable by nature, and when put in close contact with the public have often caused serious harm to spectators and property.

As your constituent, I take animal protection issues seriously, and know legislation on the local level to be a vital component of ensuring humane treatment of animals in our city. The circus simply cannot provide for the public’s safety nor the animals’ welfare, because the animals are kept in stressful, highly restricted and unnatural conditions.

In contrast, animal-free circuses like Cirque du Soleil are wonderful, humane entertainment, and should be the only kind of circuses our city endorses. This new term, please pass legislation that supports ONLY humane and safe animal-free circuses. We’re relying on you.

Sincerely,

Talking Points When Calling

* Wild-animal circuses are a known public safety risk.

* It is impossible for animal circuses to treat their wild animals humanely. The animals suffer in intense confinement, and during harsh training sessions that may last for months in the case of baby elephants.

* There are several animal-free circuses the Shriners could and should be using to fundraise – there is no excuse anymore to continue using the George Carden Circus.

* Please only support humane, animal-free circuses in the future.
