Doris Day Animal League
Sara Amundson, Deputy Director
On behalf of the 5,420 members and supporters in Minnesota of the Doris
Day Animal League, I am writing to support your efforts to pass a city
ordinance banning circuses with exotic animals from performing in
Minneapolis.
Many animal welfare experts agree that a traveling circus can't provide an
appropriate physical environment for exotic animals such as elephants,
lions, and tigers. The animals travel thousands of miles each year in
cages too small for normal postural movement. They are conditioned to
perform under threat of punishment administered with whips, clubs, iron
bars, hooks, and electric prods.
Fortunately, many communities across the U.S. are recognizing that human
safety and the humane treatment of animals should not be sacrificed fr the
sake of entertainment. An increasing number of cities have banned live
animal acts within their city limits.
